New annual fact sheet on the gender pension gap between men and women
The pension gap remains a topical issue
Of the 116,407 people who retired recently, women are receiving a total pension (statutory plus supplementary) that is 21% lower than that of men. On average, it means a difference of €488 (gross) per month. On the positive side, this gap has been decreasing over the years; in 2019, the gap was as high as 24%.
However, there is much more gender inequality in supplementary pensions. Here, the difference is a whopping 53%. By comparison, the gap for statutory pensions is 17%.
The overall pension gap varies depending on the type of pension and the length of career
For women who worked as a civil servant (and also as an employee and/or self-employed person), the average pension gap is only 6%. This is significantly lower than the gap of 26% for women who worked exclusively as employees, and 27% for women who have been both employed and self-employed.
The pension gap is smaller among recently retired employees with longer careers. For men and women who have worked for between 10 and 14 years, the difference is 17%, falling to 9% for workers with careers of between 35 and 39 years.
However, more men than women have long careers. For instance, 27% of men have a working career of 35 to 39 years compared to 12% of women.
