Update on Key Figures for Supplementary Pensions in 2025

Sigedis has published the annual update on the key figures for Belgian supplementary pensions, as it does every year.
Each year we analyse the situation of reserves and accrued entitlements that pension funds and insurers provide to DB2P for their members.

A total of 4.5 million people receive a supplementary pension on retirement
On 1 January 2025, 4,518,622 million employees and self-employed people were members of a supplementary pension scheme through their current or a former job. That is 2.6% more than in 2024. A total of 3,272,977 people are now actively accruing new supplementary pension entitlements in their current jobs. The average accrued reserve is €30,173 for men and €18,171 for women, a difference of 40%.
Overall, 78% of the Belgian working population has already accrued a supplementary pension for the future. Among employees, 80% are actively accruing pension entitlements today, while among the self-employed this figure is only 57%.

Wide variations in the amounts of supplementary pensions
The average reserve that has been accrued for all members is €25,017, while the median, the amount accrued by the member in the middle of the distribution, is only €3,821.
We also find that across all age groups, men have higher average and median reserves than women.
Among 56- to 65-year-olds, the 20% of members with the lowest reserves have accumulated less than €1,506, while the 20% of affiliates with the highest reserves have at least €77,410.

More than 113 billion in accrued reserves
By 2025, all members of supplementary pension plans in Belgium had collectively accrued more than 113 billion euros in pension reserves. A total of 80% of these accrued reserves are managed by insurers and 20% by pension funds.
Among these members, 86% have only built up reserves in the employee scheme. A total of 14% have a supplementary pension as a self-employed person, which may or may not be combined with an employee scheme.
The average accrued reserve is €29,025 for employees with a company pension, compared to €2,565 in an industry-wide pension.
Among self-employed people with an Occupational Pension Plan (“VAPZ”), the average accrued reserve is €20,883, rising to €84,260 for self-employed people with a pension plan for company managers
